Consulate General Employees Participate in Service at Local High School
October 16, 2009
Hyderabad – American and local employees of the U.S. Consulate General participated in a day of service at Purander Round Table Government High School in Begumpet, October 16, 2009. More than 30 employees spent an hour interacting with students from nursery through class 10. These activities included storytelling, singing, playing Frisbee, Mexican dances and Spanish language and career advice for classes 9 and 10.
The Consulate employees chose the school because of its proximity to their work place. The experience was equally rewarding for the Consulate employees as the students. “We all know how important a good education is,” said one Consulate employee, “and I appreciate now how difficult it is for students from poorer families to succeed. But the kids were great!”
The Consulate General employees responded to President Obama’s call to Americans to volunteer in their communities. The President declared September 11 a Day of Service. The U.S. Embassy New Delhi and the four consulates responded with outreach and projects. With support from Project 511, a voluntary community service organization, Consulate employees identified Purander Round Table Government High School for their day of volunteerism. They hope to develop the relationship over time.
