U.S. Ambassador Remembers Senator Edward Kennedy

August 26, 2009

Hyderabad –United States Ambassador to India Timothy J. Roemer today remembered Senator Edward Kennedy as a true American hero, a friend of India, and a strong voice for the poor.

Senator Kennedy passed away on August 25 after a courageous battle with cancer. Senator Kennedy was the United States’ third longest serving Senator.  He championed poverty alleviation around the world and supported educational opportunities for the middle class.

Ambassador Roemer offered condolences on behalf of the Embassy community to Senator Kennedy’s wife, Vicki, and to his family and friends around the world.

The Ambassador recalled his work with Senator Kennedy on issues such as healthcare, youth service programs, and education.  He remembered the Senator as a tireless worker on behalf of the poor, the homeless, and the voiceless.  Ambassador Roemer said, “He championed their cause with a lion’s courage and tenacity”.  The Ambassador added, “The poor have lost a champion for their cause.  The Senate has lost a legislator of historic effectiveness.  The Untied States has lost one of its truly great public servants.  The world will miss his humor, hope, and humility.”
