Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards in Hyderabad as part of the American Music Abroad Tour
Last week, the U.S. Consulate General Hyderabad hosted an all-female string group, “Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards”, a trio united by their shared love of American bluegrass/folk music and the myriad of ways it can evoke celebration, loss, pride, love and a host of other emotions. During their performance on January 31 at the Hyderabad Marriott Hotel and Convention Center, the trio took the audience through a journey that began with traditional fiddle and culminated in a collaboration with Indian musical artists Jaywant Naidu (on the modified form of the Hawaiian guitar) and Vehaan (on the tabla).
Laura Cortese and the Dance Cards are currently on a multi-country tour as part of the U.S. Department of State-funded American Music Abroad program, which brings traditional American music to international audiences. Laura Cortese and the Dance Cards have toured the U.S. and Europe, performing in every imaginable setting from farmers’ markets to music festivals, and house concerts to concert halls, while hosting workshops on fiddling, grooving, dancing and singing in between.
