U.S Ambassador to India Timothy J. Roemer, on the second day of his two day visit (October 21 and 22) to Hyderabad, met with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Konijeti Rosaiah at the Secretariat.  Ambassador Roemer lauded Andhra Pradesh’s progress in so many areas, particularly information technology, biotechnology, post secondary education, pharmaceuticals and micro finance. (more)

Ambassador Roemer meets Governor of Andhra Pradesh

U.S. Ambassador to India Timothy J Roemer, who is on his first trip to Hyderabad after taking over as U.S. Ambassador to India, called on the Andhra Pradesh Governor Narayan Datt Tiwari on Wednesday, October 21, 2009. During the courtesy call Ambassador Roemer conveyed condolences on behalf of the U.S. Government and citizens on the devastation caused by  recent floods in Andhra Pradesh. Ambassador Roemer also extended all possible help for the upcoming tour of the Governor to the United States.

Consulate General Employees Participate in Service at Local High School

American and local employees of the U.S. Consulate General participated in a day of service at Purander Round Table Government High School in Begumpet, October 16, 2009.  More than 30 employees spent an hour interacting with students from nursery through class 10. These activities included storytelling, singing, playing Frisbee, Mexican dances and Spanish language and career advice for classes 9 and 10. (more)

Scholars and researchers in Hyderabad had the opportunity to hear the views of independent American expert on U.S. foreign policy in South Asia, Dr. Rodney Jones, October 19 and 20, 2009.  Dr. Jones, President of Policy Architect’s International, Virginia, fielded questions on issues such as U.S. aid to Pakistan and the U.S. – China relationships vis-à-vis India. Consul General hosts an iftaar In Honor Of Ramadan

Consul General Cornelis M. Keur hosted an iftaar for 200 guests at Paradise Hotel on September 17, 2009.  The Consul General underscored American respect for Islam and the commitment of the United States for dialogue and exchange with Muslims throughout the world.  The Consul General noted his respect for the tradition of Muslims, their dedication to faith and family, and their generosity to those less fortunate than themselves.  “The Consulate General in Hyderabad seeks to continue its outreach to all communities, including Muslims, across the State and to strengthen relations between the U.S. and Andhra Pradesh,” he said..

U.S. Consul General Travels in Southern Andhra Pradesh 

U.S. Consul General Cornelis M. Keur returned from a five-day exploration of Southern Andhra Pradesh on Friday, October 9, 2009.  The purpose of the trip was to learn more about the industry and agriculture of Andhra Pradesh, as well as visiting educational institutions and cultural sites. (more)

Public Affairs Officer Juliet Wurr hosted a Ramadan iftar at her home on August 31, 2009.  After breaking the fast, invitees participated in prayers outside in the garden. Men and women broke their fast and said prayers in the traditional manner in which they were most comfortable. In speaking to the invitees before dinner, Ms. Wurr said she was honored her garden had been used for prayers and was happy to share this Ramadan meal with her new Indian friends. (more)

The American Documentary Showcase, a set of 29 American documentary films put together by the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State, was screened for the first time in Hyderabad, with the screening of Mel Stuart’s The Hobart Shakespeareans, one of the films in the showcase. Consul General Cornelis M. Keur Graces The National Seminar on "Uniqueness Of The Holy Quran"

At the inauguration of a two-day (July 29 and 30) national seminar on the Uniqueness of the Holy Quran Consul General, Cornelis M. Keur said that Hyderabad was the center of gravity for Urdu studies not just in India but across the world. “It is very appropriate that this conference should take place in Hyderabad because with the study of Urdu, given its sharing the script with Arabic, goes hand in hand with the study of the Quran,” he said. (more)

Consul General Cornelis M. Keur Visits Old City of Hyderabad

To encourage a better understanding between the US Consulate General Hyderabad and the people of city, Consul General Cornelis M. Keur and Mrs. Sommay Keur visited Barkas, a locality in the Old City of Hyderabad. Dominated by descendants of Yemeni families who served in the Nizam’s Army, the residents gave Consul General Keur a traditional welcome by presenting him a kafiya, while drums played in the background. Deeply inspired by President Obama’s recent speech at Cairo, the community elders hailed the President a true statesman. The Consul General presented an Urdu translation of President Obama's Cairo speech to the community.

Boyle met U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Mumbai on Sunday, July 19 and thanked her for implementing the policy for granting benefits to the domestic partners of Foreign Service Officers. During the meeting Management Officer explained the profound impact the policy, announced on May 23, had on all officers with domestic partners because it meant they were no longer invisible. (more)

Consulate General Hyderabad Celebrates Its First July 4

Over 400 guests from politics, business, media, religious communities and culture joined Consul General Cornelis M. Keur and his team in celebrating the 233rd anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. US Consulate Hyderabad celebrated its first July 4 event on July 2. Consul General Cornelis M. Keur hosted the event at Marriot Hyderabad where Andhra Pradesh Governor Narayan Dutt Tiwari was the chief guest. Management officer Mr. William Boyle and consular staff Ms. Archana Talapuru sang the American (The Star Spangled Banner) and Indian (Jana Gana Mana) national anthems respectively.

Hyderabad Consular Section Handling 440 Visa Applicants a Day

Consular services are less painful and more efficient each day at the U.S. Consulate General in Hyderabad.   And no long lines either!  From the time applicants arrive at the main gate until the end of the interview takes approximately one hour now.  When the Consulate General opened in March, just 100 visas were processed each day.  Now more than 440 applications are processed each day and consular staff are aiming for 500 applications by the end of the summer. U.S. Air Force, India to begin bilateral exercise

The U.S. and Indian air forces will train together during exercise Cope India Oct. 15-24 at Air Force Station Agra in Uttar Pradesh, India. Ambassador Roemer emphasizes U.S.-India defense cooperation in his address to Indian and American air force officers at the inauguration of the Cope India U.S.-India joint exercises in Agra on October 19. This year's airlift exercise focuses on humanitarian assistance missions. More than 150 U.S. Airmen are participating.

No nation, however large or small, wealthy or poor, can escape the impact of climate change. Rising sea levels threaten every coastline. More powerful storms and floods threaten every continent. More frequent droughts and crop failures breed hunger and conflict in places where hunger and conflict already thrive. On shrinking islands, families are already being forced to flee their homes as climate refugees.  The security and stability of each nation and all peoples - our prosperity, our health, and our safety - are in jeopardy. And the time we have to reverse this tide is running out. President Obama Picks Sonia Sotomayor to Serve on U.S. Supreme Court

President Obama announced May 26 that he will nominate U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Sonia Sotomayor to be a Supreme Court justice.

If confirmed by the Senate, Sotomayor, who the president said has “a depth of experience and a breadth of perspective that will be invaluable as a Supreme Court justice,” would be the first Hispanic to serve on the highest court in the United States. (more)
